Approval of Treasurer’s Report: In the absence of a permanent Treasurer Ginny reported that she and John have spoken with Doug Tribble. Doug will take care of Quick Books and pay bills. He charges $75 an hour but has assured us that it will never go over $150 per month. Ginny is keeping track of membership and sponsorships. $11,697.65 has been taken in in a three week period from memberships and sponsorships. Ginny will be gone for two weeks and needs someone to pick up the FLM mail. It was moved by John, seconded by Donna to approve the Treasurer’s report as presented by Ginny.
White Pines Park Liaison Report: White Pines Park held a money raiser recently. They are going to be having asphalt poured soon. They are doing well and have been very busy with lots of people enjoying the park.
Exhibit Report: Mike Skenfield brought the new signs for the set dial, the LeRoi Capstan wench and acetylene generator. He stated that a display cabinet needs to be built before the Jamboree. If Al Arietta can’t do it Mike will see that it gets done. The lumber products display is still in the planning stages. John White had stated that he would do the painting on the new display. It was moved by John, seconded by Pat to approve Mike meeting with John regarding the painting and how much he will charge. It was agreed to permit Mike to buy plywood for the display.
USFS Report: The Forest Service and the Rim Trail will have booths at the Jamboree.
OLD BUSINESS:
August 20th Family Day at Big Trees State Park: Sue Harmuth and Pat Bradley were in charge of a log sawing demonstration at the Big Trees Family Day. This was good public relations for the Logging Museum. Bob and Sharon Ash also had a FLM booth at an event at Cedar Center that day

NEW BUSINESS:
Website Changes: John reported that the Jamboree is on the website as well as the cancellation of the Snag Fallers’ Ball.
Announcements:
The position of Treasurer on the Board of Directors is open Anyone who is interested should contact Ginny.
Ginny went to Sequoia Woods regarding White Pines Park and the Logging Museum. Last year the park received $4,000 from the golf tournament. This year the museum will be the recipient of the proceeds from the golf tournament.
Ginny shared a recent newspaper article regarding our need for docents. We were reminded that the word “volunteer” is less intimidating than “docent” to most people. On 8/24/16 Pat will be taping for Channel 7 regarding the Jamboree and also the need for volunteers. She will describe the duties and stress that they can set their own work schedule.
The Chapel in the Pines will hold a worship service in the Museum amphitheater on Sunday, 9/25/16. Someone needs to be at the museum at 9:30 to open the museum and make sure the outside electricity is turned on.
Four new docents (Dan Smith, Dinea ?, Ralph and JoAnn Costa) will be working next week at the museum.

MINUTES OF THE FLM BD. MEETING
July 26, 2016
President Ginny Kafka called the meeting to order at 1:12pm. Those in attendance were Sue Harmuth, Bob & Sharon Ash, Helen Tardif, Pat Bradley, Richard Small, Mike Skenfield, Bill Nelson & Carol Aquilina.
VISITORS: A resident of Camp Connell donated 2 saws which belonged to his family.
CORRESPONDENCE: Ginny reported hearing from a “Nancy Villa” in Sonora who’s father had been an excellent logging truck driver for 39 years; she wanted his name placed on the “Fallen Loggers” monument; Ginny explained that only those lumbermen who lost their lives on the job were eligible. This led to other possible ways to show respect for hard working lumbermen we’ve lost…i.e. a “memorial bench”, “placques”. Bill Nelson moved that this be done; Sue seconded; the motion carried. Ginny has a long list of men who fall within this category which will be included in their commemoration.
MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: Helen moved that these minutes be approved; Bill Nelson seconded; motion carried
TREASURER’S REPORT: John White reported that the past month had involved more funds going out than coming in. But this should not be a problem as the annual FLM Newsletter will be mailed very soon; membership money from new members and member renewals are anticipated to be received very soon.
WHITE PINES PARK: Ginny reported that WPP membership dues have been received amounting to several thousand dollars; maintenance is going well.
EXHIBIT CHAIR REPORT: Mike Skenfield said he’s concerned if 2 signs which include the “set dial” (inside a sawmill) will be finished before the Jamboree on September 3rd.
OLD BUSINESS: On August 27th, Big Trees Family Day, Sue & Pat will once again run the “log-sawing” booth at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The Park is so helpful in furnishing the log, chairs and table. This booth attracts all ages from infants to the elderly; photos are always so popular!
Ginny reported that Clinton Kafka put in 18 hours of work hauling pine needles away from the Museum site that were left several months ago by CalFire. Bill Nelson moved that FLM pay Clinton $495, for this work; Sue seconded the motion, which carried. Ginny reported that she and husband, Bill, brought a new picnic table from Ace Hardware to the Museum deck on July 24th, which is a very nice size and design.
Regarding the Jamboree coming up on Sept. 3rd, detailed plans are still being worked on, such as where and how the food will be purchased and handled.
NEW BUSINESS: Thanks to our very fine Exec. Officer, John Hofstetter, the FLM Newsletter, 2016 is excellent. Copies of the newsletter will be sent to paid members immediately; membership renewals are always so welcome! SNAC of Arnold, once again gave special support to FLM by donating a $600 kayak for the Jamboree Silent Auction; there will be a Jamboree meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 10th at 1pm. Ginny happily reported that a reporter from the Union Democrat had just been to the Museum; took many photos….the forthcoming article will feature the need for new docents. Ginny said that Ted Shannon would like to set up a table and information out on the Museum entrance area, featuring information about docents’ duties, training, etc. Everyone thought this to be an excellent idea. Sue Harmuth was praised and congratulated for winning 2nd Prize in the Independence Day Parade in Arnold on July 2, 2016. Sue was a lone entry, all by herself, received very favorable reactions from the public as she marched along Highway 4, from start to finish. (Sue, we’re SO proud of you!) It’s very possible that FLM may soon be the recipient of a very generous donation from Sequoia Wds Golfing Club, according to Ginny. Also, Sue would like to move the 2 Japanese Maple trees (donated in Dale Brooks’ memory) now growing in an inappropriate area for this species. This idea was approved by all.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:30pm; the next FLM Board Meeting will be
August 23rd, 2016.
Respectfully submitted, Pat Bradley, Substitute FLM Secretary

Correspondence: Pat shared that she had received a card from the Kafka’s stating that they had arrived at their campsite near Quincy.
Information/Discussion Items: John H. stated that Amador County has requested copies of our museum brochures, which prompted a decision to order 1,000 more brochures.
Bob Ash handed out a copy of an article written by Ted Shannon on the Sierra Nevada Timber Industry. John H. and Mike will edit the article for approval at the next board meeting. If approved John H. will make the decision as to how to use the article.
Minutes: It was moved by John Hofstetter, seconded by John White, to approve the minutes of the 5/24/16 meeting as presented. The motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer’s report was presented by John White. John explained that because of the purchase of a lot of inventory in May the expenses exceeded income. It was moved by John Hofstetter, seconded by Sharon Ash, to accept the report as presented. The motion carried.
USFS: Carl Graves reported that the fire crews have been busy cutting hazard trees in the campgrounds. They have been trying to sell the trees but no one is interested. Trees have been cut as well as cottonwoods planted at the Mule Deer Foundation at Big Rattlesnake Creek. Beetle kill trees are also being salvaged.
Exhibit Report: Mike has delivered 6 stands for the outside signs. Mike and John H. are working on the narratives for the signs, which include the set-dial (inside) and the LeRoi winch and acetylene generator outside. The back wall of the diorama has been completed by John W. and needs to be installed. The DVD needs to be reset so that it doesn’t shut off on its own.
Jamboree Report: Bob reported that the agreement with CCWD has been signed. There has been a snag with the insurance regarding liquor liability but is being worked out. It was agreed to hold a Jamboree meeting on Thursday, 7/7/16 at 1:00 p.m. Helen, Bob and Sue with attend. It was moved by Pat Bradley, seconded by John W. to give Steve Kafka $500 for his services at the Jamboree. Pat volunteered to donate 20% of the $500. The motion carried. John will be meeting at the museum with Bill Kuphalt’s daughter who will be donating some pictures, etc. The newsletter should be ready to go by mid-August. A mailing crew will be needed to address and stuff envelopes, etc. Nancy Muleady Meckam has offered to write a grant for financial support through SPI. It was moved by John H., seconded by Pat to have her go ahead with the grant writing. The motion carried.
Company Store: For inventory purposes, John W. stated the sale of T-shirts should be recorded with a description as to whether they are museum shirts, Jamboree shirts, etc. Bob passed around a picture of a tote and shirt that will be available in the store. Because many of the flashlights don’t work it was decided to give them away for free. It was suggested that the price of the license plate frames be lowered to $2.00. We need to consult with an accountant as to whether or not company store sales are considered a donation, for tax purposes. Items that don’t sell well in the store may be put on a sale table at the Jamboree. It was also suggested that these items could be given as prizes for a kids contest at the Jamboree. Helen, John, and Bob will meet after the 7/17 Jamboree meeting to set prices of store items and determine what items need to be cleared out. It was also suggested that we get a wood sculpture from Jeff Rapetti to raffle at the Jamboree.
OLD BUSINESS:

Information/Discussion Items: Jean Oliver and ladies from her club visited the museum recently and made a $340 donation. Also, Hazel Fischer School students made a $20 donation on their recent visit.
In order to attract more docents it was suggested that we change the word “docent” to “volunteer as the word “docent” might tend to make people feel that more is expected of them. Twelve to twenty new volunteers are needed. It was suggested that we put an ad/article in the Lode Star stating our need for volunteers. Also suggested was printing off flyers similar to those from the Angels Camp Museum and adding “Learning Center” to the flyer.
Minutes: It was moved by John Hofstetter, seconded by John White, to approve the minutes of the 4/26/16 meeting as presented. The motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer’s report was presented by John White. It was moved by John Hofstetter, seconded by Carol Aquilina, to accept the report as presented. The motion carried. John reported that Doug Tribble prepared the taxes which were sent in and the forms have been received.
White Pines Liaison Report: Ginny reported that through donations from the Sequoia Woods Men’s Club a lawn mower has been purchased. SPI has donated tables, the Lions Club has donated sand for the beach, and $500 has also been donated. When Logging Museum/Learning Center flyers are printed we could put some at the park. White Pines Park will be sending out letters regarding a $1,000 raffle. The FLM bookmarks will be included in that letter.
Exhibit Report: Mike presented an idea for a new display. There was discussion regarding the relocation of the wood products, chain saw, and set-dial displays in order to accommodate a new display while maintaining continuity with existing ones. Nothing definite was decided at this time.
USFS: No report.
OLD BUSINESS:
Power Outage: John White reported that we are saving $90 a month with the new phone system.
Outside Display Signs for Gas Generator and LeRoi Winch: The pipes have been set in the ground for these display signs but the signs still need to be made. Mike reported that a water tank that goes with the Steam Donkey has been dropped off and will become a part of that display.
Additional Gravel Path: The work for the additional 60 feet of gravel path is currently being completed by Bill Kafka.
Big Trees Family Day: Big Trees Family Day will be held on 8/27. Bob and Sharon Ash, Richard Small, and Pat Bradley will represent the museum. NEW BUSINESS:
Web Site Changes: John H. has added articles to the website regarding Hazel Fischer, Brice Station, and the Winton Lumber Co.
Refrigerator: As the refrigerator is no longer working it was moved by Bob Ash, seconded by Sharon Ash to approve up to $150 for the purchase of a new refrigerator. The motion carried. Bob and Sharon will do the purchasing.

Weed Eating: Weed eating of the grounds will be completed prior to the Jamboree.
Fair Report: Many people stopped by the FLM booth at the fair and received a free tree. Three people signed up to volunteer at the museum.
Discussion Items:
July 4th Parade: Rick Brathauer has offered his truck for the parade. It will be decorated to represent a logging truck. It was suggested that volunteers walk beside the truck and hand out FLM pens.
Jamboree: Ginny feels that her son Steve will again organize the Jamboree this year. Bob Ash has already begun some of the necessary ground work for the Jamboree. Ginny will contact Bill Ladd about having the Shay working for this year’s Jamboree.
Bookmarks: John White has the new bookmarks ready to go to the printer except for the dates of the Jamboree and the Snagfaller’s Ball. There was discussion as to whether or not to hold the Snagfaller’s Ball this year. Pat stated that she felt we should. It was decided not to put a specific date on the bookmarks for these two events, but rather put “the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend” for the Jamboree and to contact Independence Hall to see if we can reserve the same Saturday of October for several consecutive years. This would prevent us from having to print new bookmarks each year.
Rim Trail Maps: A $1.00 donation should be collected for Rim Trail maps. Rick Lautterbaugh picks up the donations periodically.
Store Inventory: Many items need to be ordered for the FLM Store.
Newsletter: It was agreed that Claire Moran will be featured in this year’s newsletter.
Adjournment: Ginny adjourned the meeting at 3:11 p.m.

After discussion, it was moved by Donna Hanan, seconded by Pat to leave the existing display table where it is and pursue other options for the location of the wood products display. The motion carried, with one abstention. It was suggested that the wood products display be placed outside, either on a rolling base that can be brought in after hours or permanently fixed to the front outside wall.

Grounds Cleanup: Grounds cleanup will be done before the Jamboree in the fall.
NEW BUSINESS:
Web Site Changes: John H. reported that a couple of new articles will be added to the website. One of these articles is about Hazel Fischer while the other is about Brice Station. John should have mentioned that our website helper, Nhu, is now hosting the web site she developed for us and we will no longer be paying GoDaddy for hosting us. Saves us some money.
Marin County Museum: John H. shared that the Marin County Museum has received donations of $50,000 each from a private individual and the county of Marin, so they are up and running again. His interest in this museum was that the Board was selling off their exhibits to raise money to keep the museum open. This in probably the wealthiest County in California.

Board Minutes, December 10, 2015
President Ginny Kafka called the meeting to order at 12:35pm at the most gracious home of Wanda & John Hofstetter. Ginny and Bill provided the delicious pizza and wine that was served as lunch. Since the Logging Museum closed earlier, this last Board meeting of the year was held in Murphys. Those in attendance were Mike Skenfield, Bob & Sharon Ash, Helen Tardif, Bill & Ginny Kafka, John White, John Hofstetter & Pat Bradley.
Minutes of the November, 2015, Bd. Meeting were approved…..Pat made the motion, Bob seconded the motion which carried.
Treasurer’s Report was given by Treasurer John White and was approved….Bob made the motion, Ginny seconded the motion which carried.
WHITE PINES PARK UPDATE: Ginny Kafka, FLM President, is also the White Pines Park President. She reported that the holiday parade held on the 29th of November in White Pines was very successful; an estimate of 2000 attendees helped make a very joyous, holiday parade. Much of the credit goes to Lisa & Tim Muetterties of Arnold; they managed to acquire $8,000/Sponsorship for the Park. The Park closed on Dec. 16th for the season. There has been a lot of inefficient management of legal matters like a lease that WP Park entered into with the County. This lease has apparently been lost in the bureaucratic vacuum. Pressure has been put on CCWD & the County; if a resolution doesn’t happen by spring, the White Pines Park Committee will not open the park.
EXHIBIT CHAIRMAN UPDATE: Mike Skenfield, FLM Exhibit Chairman, reported that his most recent exhibit (slide show) is not running perfectly but we’ll try to get it to run for approximately 4 hours which will suffice during docent shifts between Noon & 4pm. Mike is hoping this will continue correctly so as to not have to buy new equipment. Craig Mattson helped Mike take down the 22 signs during winter that describe the Museum’s outdoor exhibits. Mike is anxious to create an exhibit of beautiful wood products…this hopefully being displayed across from the “sawmill” seems very appropriate. Dick Bradford, of Murphys has a marvelous shop; Mike is sure that Dick could help with this “wood product” display immensely.
USFS UPDATE: Pres. Ginny said once again she tried to reach Park Ranger Kevin Zeman re the Board meeting to no avail. She plans to wait until we convene again; if Kenin cannot be reached by that time, she will ask the powers that be to replace Kevin.
OLD BUSINESS: John Hofstetter reported that the results of the power outage continues to be a problem. Mother Lode Internet is involved in the solution process. Hopefully by April when the Museum opens for the 2016 season, this problem will be history.
Annual Docent Lunch: This successful event was held in Nov., 2015. Pat chaired the event; she feels this is the most important event of the year for FLM. Where would the Museum be today without the docents and other outstanding members and community helpers?
MUSEUM CLOSING DATE: November 29, 2015. Much thanks go to Ginny & Bill for closing the Museum for the season…..thanks so much, Guys!
NEW BUSINESS: John reported that, as usual, there are website changes constantly. He stated that in regard to a DVD/TV that had failed, Amazon was very helpful. There is a need for winter cleanup. Also, everyone agreed that during the time that the Museum is closed, time should DEFINITELY be arranged for those Bd. Members who would care to spend time in the Museum during Feb. & March, sorting through so much stuff that has piled up in the Archive Room and in the Media Room. Decisions must be made as to what FLM should keep in the Archives and what can be done away with.
Special thanks were sent to Dave Gano, a wonderful artist and retired teacher, who once again donated a nice supply of his White Pines Park greeting cards which includes the history of the area going back to the days of the Blagen Mill in the late 1930s.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:45pm.
Respectfully submitted,
